Sony Pictures Imageworks explains how the movie was made.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is known for its beautiful visuals, and Sony Pictures Imageworks is ready to show what's behind them. The studio has released a series of videos explaining various intricate details of the movie's VFX, cinematography, and characters in particular.

Take a look at Spot, a.k.a. Dr. Johnathon Ohnn, a villain you can see in Spider-Man. To create him, several teams had to work together.

"This deceptively simple design required an unusual collaboration between the animation, effects, and compositing departments at Sony Pictures Imageworks. Animators used special silhouette sculpting tools and drew rough 2D effects, effects artists used new software developed for watercolor and sketch looks, and compositors integrated the 2D artists' draw-overs as well as other layers, like proprietary linework tools, to bring together his groundbreaking look."

Senior 2D FX animator Nikolaos Finizio offered a closer look at his work. You can see his hand-drawn animated layers and what they eventually turned into.
