A Free App Turns Photos Into 3D Models Using Apple’s Object Capture API

Have a look at a powerful new app called PhotoCatch.

You've probably heard about Apple’s new Object Capture API allowing users to create 3D models with the iPhone camera. It sounds super powerful already but you have to check this free app by developer Ethan Saadia. PhotoCatch is a tool that uses the Object Capture API to capture objects and turn them into 3D models in a matter of minutes.

The process is incredibly simple: you just need to select a folder with photos you have of an object, tweak settings, and click the Create Model button. The output is an object as a USDZ file that can be shared with other users and exported to other 3D tools. Please note that the new app requires an Intel Mac with 16GB RAM and an AMD GPU featuring 4GB VRAM or more. You can also use any Mac with the M1 chip.

There's a web version to process the images in the cloud for those who don't own an Apple device but this version costs $1.99 per and there are additional costs per rendered photo.

As for inputs, a good-looking result would require about 30 photos but you can use more to get a high-quality result. The app for Mac is free and available here
