A New Method of Setting Up Real-Time Volumetric Effects in Houdini

Ivan Larinin demonstrated Sphere Tracing, a new technique for rendering implicit surfaces using geometric distances.

Senior Houdini FXTD at Sony Pictures Imageworks Ivan Larinin has demonstrated a new technique for visualizing a noise pattern with VEX, a high-performance expression language, using raymarching in Houdini. Check out Sphere Tracing, a method of rendering implicit surfaces using geometric distances. According to the developer, the method computes 2D images from 3D scenes, allowing one to create cool-looking real-time volumetric effects.

"Rays are cast from the camera focal point and iteratively marched until they intersect with objects which are defined via signed distance functions," comments the developer.
