A Story About DALL-E 2 and Heinz Ketchup

Here's an interesting story of how Heinz's new commercial turned out to be an exaggeration.

Recently, the food processing company Heinz, known for its sauces and condiments, revealed a new commercial that utilized OpenAI's DALL-E 2 text-to-image network. With this ad, the company claimed that the AI considers the words "ketchup" and "Heinz" to be basically synonyms, showing examples of DALL-E-generated images that resemble Heinz's iconic design and stating that these were created by simply using the word "ketchup" as the prompt.

"We used A.I. to generate images of ketchup on DALL-E 2. The result? Just like humans, A.I. prefers Heinz," commented the company.

However, thanks to ML Prompt Engineer and 3D Animator Fabian Mosele's quick fact-check, it was revealed that the company might have exaggerated the popularity of their product and added some additional words to the prompt, most likely the brand name itself.

Using the alleged prompts demonstrated by Heinz, Fabian generated sets of images with the same AI and showed that the DALL-E-made pictures bear no resemblance to the ones shown in the advert, proving that there definitely was something more to the company's prompts.

Previously, Cosmopolitan, an American fashion and entertainment magazine for women, also utilized DALL-E 2 to generate a picture that was then used as a magazine cover, marking the first time OpenAI's network was used for that purpose.
