Apple Filed an Appeal in the Epic Case

The appeal could now delay changes for years.

Apple decided to file an appeal of the ruling in the case against Fortnite developer Epic Games. Apple won 9 of the 10 claims made by Epic Games, but the company is not happy about the one they lost. This one point states Apple was illegally stifling consumers from their choice of which payment system to use for in-app purchases. The appeal could now delay changes for years.

CNBC reports that the giant sent a notice of appeal asking for a stay of the injunction that will let developers add other in-app payment systems besides Apple's. This move could potentially lead to the new rules not taking effect until the end of the case.

"At a high level, it is my judgment that, without thoughtful restrictions in place to protect consumers, developers and the iOS platform, this change will harm users, developers, and the iOS platform more generally," Trystan Kosmynka, Apple's senior director of App Review, noted in a filing on Friday.

Previously, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney noted that Apple gave itself access to an advertising slot that is now available to competitors – the iPhone's Settings screen. Some users noticed they are promoting their own services at the top of the Settings menu, just below their Apple ID.
