Breaking Bad Creator Once Pitched GTA-Inspired Game Adaptation

The creators also tried to make a VR experience on the PlayStation headset.

Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan has shared that he once suggested the idea of a Grand Theft Auto-like video game adaptation of the show.

In an interview on the "Inside the Gilliverse" podcast, as reported by ComicBook, Gilligan revealed that there had been several ideas for a Breaking Bad game, including a VR experience, but they were not completed. Although his idea of a GTA-style game has not been realized, he thinks it still "makes sense".

"I'm not much of a video game player, but how can you not know Grand Theft Auto," said Gilligan. "I remember saying to the guys, that are off running Apple now, who said yes originally to Breaking Bad, 'Who owns Grand Theft Auto? Can't you have a module, can there be a Breaking Bad [game]?' [It] still makes sense to me!"

The idea never came to fruition though. "There have been quite a few attempts at video games, some of them kind of made it to market. We tried to do a VR experience with the Sony PlayStation VR headset. We did a mobile game that lasted for a little while."

The mobile game Breaking Bad: Criminal Elements let you build your own drug empire, but it was closed in 2020, a year after release.

Gilligan explained that making games is hard and expensive, and it should be a good game that doesn't just rely on its name, like the infamous E.T. Atari game.

So seems like fans shouldn't expect a Breaking Bad game adaptation any time soon.
