Digital Painting

with Lane Brown

This course is an introduction to digital painting and color composition for film and animation. With an emphasis on studying the works of old masters, students will discover the process of how to deconstruct the picture plane through film studies, reproductions of master works, and the widely used — but often understated — industry-standard technique of 'Photobashing'. Course work will cover color theory, perspective, and the use of brushes & textures in Photoshop (this includes: creating images of characters, props, or vehicles using photo overlays in Photoshop).

Character Design for Film and Games

with David Paget

This course will explore the key aspects of creating character concept art within the games and film industries. The course begins with the basics of design and the iteration process of generating ideas. As the course progresses, the ideas will become more developed resulting in an overall final design for your portfolio. The course will explore a range of techniques and methods so students can experiment with different software and adapt it into their individual workflows.

3D for 2D Artists

with Ricardo Guimaraes

In this course, students will learn the complete workflow of using 3D software to speed up the process to create stunning 2D images. Both 3D and 2D skills will be combined to allow students to deliver the best possible images in the shortest span of time. Students will quickly move from their 2D sketches to a 3D sketch technique which will allow them to explore ideas and compositions much more dynamically. From there, you will take a look at a few Blender tools and techniques which will enable you to quickly assemble their scenes in 3D.

Environment Sketching

with Dzu Nguyen

This class will focus on creating compelling environments with a strong and consistent design language. Students will learn a process from start to finish that will enable them to generate and iterate on their ideas to find the best image for the story. Topics that will be covered include visual storytelling, composition, and perspective. Developing a visual language and creating strong mood through the use of values and lighting will also be discussed.

Matte Painting

with Marcos Shih

In this course, you will go through the complex discipline of matte painting, utilizing many different skill sets you will be primarily working in Photoshop. Using photography and combining them into your pieces, you will create skyscapes, landscapes, cityscapes, and seascapes — and create different design possibilities and lighting scenarios. There will be a lecture on the history of matte paintings and how traditional principles and techniques are still applied today to current matte work with the newest technology and tools.

UE4 Modular Environments

with Clinton Crumpler

In this course, students will be taught how to break down reference and develop a list of reusable modular assets, utilizing trims, tileable and unique texture sets. With this list, students will then use both Maya and the Unreal Engine to create a fully realized environment with portfolio screenshots. The class will cover Unreal Engine 4, Maya, Substance Painter, Photoshop, Marmoset.

VFX Set Extensions

with Paul McWilliams

This 8-week course provides an in-depth look at the process for creating set extensions used in film and television. During this course, students will create a visual effects (VFX) set extension with a focus on 3D environment creation and matte painting integration. The course is suitable for someone looking to develop their 3D Generalist skills. Intro to Production Modeling

with Hunton Hodgkins

The aim of this course is to expose you to all of the things you'll need in order to be successful in a professional work environment as a 3D modeler. During this class, you'll learn how to streamline yourself to be a fast, efficient, and effective 3D artist. One of the core issues that junior artists face when working at a large company is learning how to acclimate to the studio environment. This course will teach you what the expectations are for production modeling and what it’s like to work on a production team.

Rigging Techniques: Cartoon to Realistic

with Mathias Royrvik

This course is intended to not just click buttons and follow the path that Maya lays out, but deep into the different nodes that Maya has and see how you can use this to your advantage to create flexible rigs. At the end of the course, the students should have a good understanding of how data flows through Maya and how they can manipulate this. In addition, they will have solid ideas and techniques for building and maintaining rigs for production.
