Developer Recreated Their Living Room in Half-Life: Alyx

Graham Rust's room was made using Maya, Substance 3D Painter, and Unreal Engine.

Take a look at this cozy living room with a headcrab you can play fetch with and a bunch of Combine soldiers keeping you from harm. The room was created and then imported into Half-Life: Alyx mod editor by developer Graham Rust using Maya, Substance 3D Painter, and Unreal Engine. You can even download and try it youself.

The author shared that it all started with a 3D model of the desk made in Maya years ago. Then other details came along.

"The curtains were particularly hard. I started with a flat plane, then I did a 8 hour long cloth simulation in Autodesk Maya. Took me dozens of simulations before I got the cloth properties just right. It was a great learning experience."

Interestingly enough, the artist didn't use photogrammetry for the project. The photos that had been taken were only used to verify the models. However, Graham Rust notes that "technically the textures are photogrammetry because Substance Painter uses that technique for most materials."

The developer shared that his goal has always been to get a glimpse into the future, "no matter how inconvenient or buggy it is." Let's hope we'll get to that point one day.
