Dwarf Fortress Generated Revenue of $7.2 Million in January

The new revenue figure represents a significant increase from $15,635 earned in December 2022.

Bay 12 Games has reported revenue of over $7.2 million since the launch of Dwarf Fortress in December 2022. According to the latest report, the studio earned $7,230,123 in January 2023, a significant increase from the $15,635 earned in December 2022.

The difference between the December and January revenue can be attributed to the release of the 1.0 version of Dwarf Fortress on December 6, 2022. The title was published with the support of Kitfox Games and has seen huge success since its launch.

Last month, 12 Games revealed that the enhanced, graphical version of 2006's title sold nearly half a million copies in Dwarf Fortress' debut month on Steam. At the time of the announcement, the studio stated that the exact revenue figures would not be available until mid-February after being processed by Valve and Kitfox. However, it appears that the information was obtained sooner than expected.

In the report, Dwarf Fortress co-creator Tarn Adams detailed the use of the money earned from the game. According to him, approximately half of the revenue will be used for taxes and for paying for business expenses, such as salaries and more.

The remaining revenue will be used for personal purposes, such as resolving health and retirement concerns. The success of the game has also secured the future of the game, which led to expanding the team.

The new revenue figures reflect the significant success the enhanced version of Dwarf Fortress brought to the studio. In comparison, Bay 12's total revenue for the year 2022 was close to $165,000 and its earnings over the past decade amounted to $974,000.
