Firefly: Adobe's New Family of Generative AI Models

Currently in beta, Firefly's AI generators are set to be added to Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere Pro further down the line.

Software developer Adobe has announced the launch of Firefly, a new family of generative AI models focusing primarily on image and text effect generation.

Currently in beta, Firefly features two AI-powered instruments – a text-to-image tool, which enables its user to create unique images from text prompts, and a text effects tool, which allows one to apply styles or textures to text with language descriptions – with the company planning to add more applications further down the line. According to Adobe, Firefly was designed to "offer new ways to ideate, create, and communicate while significantly improving creative workflows."

The developer also noted that the initial Firefly model was trained on Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content, and public domain content where copyright has expired, meaning that they didn't use Digital Artists' works to teach their AIs.

At the moment, Firefly's toolset is available in a browser, with Adobe planning to add its AI generators to Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere Pro sometime in the future. You can learn more and try Firefly yourself by clicking this link.

The introduction of Firefly, however, is not the only AI-related statement made by Adobe today. During GTC 2023, the company also announced a new partnership with NVIDIA, planning to co-develop a new generation of advanced generative AI models with a focus on deep integration into applications used by Digital Creators.

According to the announcement, these models will be jointly created and brought to market through Adobe's Creative Cloud products (Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere Pro), as well as through NVIDIA Picasso, a new cloud service for building and deploying generative AI-powered image, video, and 3D applications, also introduced at this year's GTC.

"Adobe and NVIDIA have a long history of working closely together to advance the technology of creativity and marketing," said Scott Belsky, Chief Strategy Officer and EVP, Design and Emerging Products at Adobe. "We’re thrilled to partner with them on ways that generative AI can give our customers more creative options, speed their work, and help scale content production."
