Google Randomly Sent a Bug Bounty Hunter $250,000

A self-described hacker Sam Curry was baffled by the unexpected $250,000 payment from Google.

A self-described hacker Sam Curry has recently shared on Twitter that he received almost $250,000 from Google last month adding that he had no idea why the tech giant handed over this large sum of money.

"It's been a little over 3 weeks since Google randomly sent me $249,999 and I still haven't heard anything on the support ticket," Curry wrote. "Is there any way we could get in touch, Google?"

In his Twitter bio, Curry, who works as a staff security engineer at Yuga Labs, the blockchain technology company that created the famous Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection, describes himself as a hacker and a bug bounty hunter, a person who gets paid to help various companies find vulnerabilities in their software.

Speaking to NPR, Curry shared that he sometimes does bug bounty hunting for different firms, including Google. However, he noted that he was unable to understand the link between bug bounty hunting for Google and this large sum of money he got from the tech giant.

It turned out that $250,000 was sent to Curry by mistake, Google confirmed in a statement to NPR and MarketWatch, and the company is currently working to fix it.

"Our team recently made a payment to the wrong party as the result of human error," a Google spokesperson said. "We appreciate that it was quickly communicated to us by the impacted partner, and we are working to correct it.”

Curry also confirmed to MarketWatch that Google indeed contacted him and discussed the process of sending the money back.
