GPT-Powered NPC Interactions Set Up in Unreal Engine

The AI future is almost here.

With AI improving every day, one has to wonder how far it can go eventually. Game development is one of the areas that can use it extensively and yield awesome results.

While Ubisoft is working on its scriptwriter tool Ghostwriter, a Redditor called _SideniuS_ has presented their own GPT-powered experiment in Unreal Engine. The creator managed to set up a system allowing you to talk to NPCs with prompts using natural language.

In the video, the player first convinces a guard to let them into the building and then trades a quest for an authorization pass – all by typing whatever they have in mind. According to the comments from _SideniuS_, the NPCs could even be bribed or charmed into doing what you want thanks to an invisible gauge that indicates how much the character likes or dislikes you, which changes depending on your actions.

_SideniuS_ used the GPT-3.5 Davinci model, and the result is impressive, so we're looking forward to what the new GPT-4 can do to make games more varied and natural.
