Hackers Who Breached Riot's Security System Reportedly Demand $10M from the Studio

The attackers are reportedly asking for $10 million to prevent the leak of League of Legends source code and claim that the company's security system is so weak that even an amateur would be able to breach it.

Earlier this week, Riot Games confirmed that the source code for several of its titles, including League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics, as well as its legacy anti-cheat platform were stolen due to a cyber attack, with hackers holding the files for ransom.

And now, more details on this ransom threat have been revealed. According to Vice, which claims that it has obtained a copy of the ransom email, hackers are asking for $10 million from the developer. In exchange for this, they reportedly promised to completely delete all the stolen data, talk about how they managed to carry out the attack, and give advice on how to prevent such incidents in the future.

As evidence, the attackers attached two PDF files to the email, proving that they had access to the anti-cheat platform and the League of Legends source code.

The hackers also provided a link to a Telegram channel to contact them. Vice journalists managed to enter the chat – in the list of users, there were people whose nicknames coincided with the names of former employees of Riot Games.

At the end of the letter, the attackers noted that even amateurs can breach the Riot security system, and studio employees should be ashamed of the public exposure of their company.

According to the hackers, the main goal of this attack was purely financial gain. They added that Riot has only 12 hours to respond to their email before they expose the files to the public. However, at the time of writing, the attackers have not taken any action, although several days have passed since the message was sent.
