Indiana Jones 5 Does Flashback Magic with the New VFX Technology

Harrison Ford de-aged to his original trilogy appearance thanks to ILM's new VFX technology.

Empire magazine confirmed that Harrison Ford will be de-aged using visual effects so that Indy could look natural when he appears in a flashback scene at the beginning of the film.

James Mangold who replaced Steven Spielberg in the director's seat for Indiana Jones 5 explained that the movie's opening scene takes place in 1944 and then viewers "fall out" and find themselves in 1969 so the team didn't want the audience to "experience the change between the '40s and '60s as an intellectual conceit" but wished that they felt the "buccaneering spirit of those early days… and then the beginning of now" instead.

"My hope is that, although it will be talked about in terms of technology, you just watch it and go, 'Oh my God, they just found footage. This was a thing they shot 40 years ago,'" producer Kathleen Kennedy said.

As Empire noted, to pull the sequence off, the team came up with several techniques including new software from the motion picture visual effects company Industrial Light & Magic that matched archived footage of the younger Ford to the newly shot footage.

Commenting on the de-aging technology and the younger version of Indy it created for the movie, Ford shared that it was the first time when seeing his younger self felt really convincing, however, he admitted that, at the same time, it was "a little spooky."

"This is the first time I’ve seen it where I believe it," Ford told Empire. "It’s a little spooky. I don’t think I even want to know how it works, but it works."
