League of Legends Source Code Stolen and Held for Ransom, Riot Says

The studio notes that no player data or personal information was compromised in the attack but says that the theft of source code has temporarily impacted the company's ability to release new content.

The source code for multiple Riot Games titles and the company's legacy anti-cheat platform has been obtained by hackers, who are now demanding ransom payments, according to a statement from a company representative on Twitter.

Last week, the League of Legends developer revealed that its systems had been compromised by a social engineering attack, a method of attack involving manipulating individuals into divulging sensitive information or taking certain actions through psychological means.

Yesterday, the company provided an update on the situation, stating that the breach resulted in the theft of source code for several of its titles, including League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics, as well as its legacy anti-cheat platform which has temporarily impacted the company's ability to release new content.

Riot also shared that soon after the breach it received a ransom threat. "Needless to say, we won’t pay," the company commented.

The company also mentioned that the stolen source code consisted of "experimental features" that are still in the prototype stage and may or may not be officially released to the public. It also acknowledged that leaks in the source code may result in new in-game cheats, but noted that it is now actively working to address and resolve this issue.

Riot stressed that no player data or personal information was compromised in the attack. It also stated that it intends to publish a full report that details the attackers' techniques, the areas where the company's security controls failed, and the steps the team is taking to ensure that this does not happen again in the near future.
