Left 4 Dead & Portal Developer Kim Swift Joins Xbox

After working as a game design director at Google Stadia until it shut down in February 2021, Kim became Xbox's senior director of cloud gaming.

At 38, Kim Swift is already a well-known name in gaming and a veteran in the industry. Kim's first project Narbacular Drop became the inspiration for many gamers' beloved Portal from Valve. The main character cannot jump but she can open portals to quickly transfer from one place to another. In the game, you can open a single pair of interconnected portals at a time, you can see and walk through them. After Narbacular Drop, Kim developed Portal for Valve where the game mechanics are basically the same: you solve puzzles as you move along using portals.

After that, Kim Swift has worked for Valve, Airtight Games, and EA and took part in the creation of Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2, Quantum Conundrum, Star Wars Battlefront II, and other games. Kim's experience as a game design director at Google Stadia is going to be especially important at her new job at Xbox.

“Kim is going to build a team focused on new experiences in the cloud,” commented Peter Wyse, Xbox Game Studios publishing head in an interview with Polygon. Peter explained that Microsoft’s goal is to create “cloud-native games.”
