Meta's Starburst Prototype Might Help VR Headsets Pass the Visual Turing Test

Meta’s Display Systems Research Director talked about how Starburst can help researchers gauge where to target future headset designs.

Douglas Lanman, Meta’s Head of Display Systems Research, talked about the Starburst prototype and the ‘grand challenge’ of passing the Visual Turing Test.

Meta presented its massive Starburst in summer, showing off its high dynamic range lighting with brightness up to 20,000 nits. It's so heavy that you have to hold it, but its potential might go a long way, longer than the VR headsets we're used to. The prototype with such luminance could help researchers understand where to target future headsets along this parameter to make them pass the Visual Turing Test, which "evaluates whether what’s displayed in a VR headset can be distinguished from the real world."

“Everything fights with everything else,” Lanman told UploadVR. “Pancake lenses, yes, they’re less optically efficient but you can have this amazingly elegant and comfortable form factor. So now it’s a question: What do you as a user care most about? Do you care about comfort? Do you care about the aesthetics of the device? Do you care about the Visual Turing Test that I so care about? And what would you sacrifice to have it? Heavier headset? Shorter battery life?”
