Microsoft Makes New Multibillion-Dollar Investment in OpenAI

The investment marks the third phase of the partnership that is set to accelerate breakthroughs in AI and help the two companies bring advanced technologies to the market.

Microsoft has announced that it is extending its partnership with DALL-E and ChatGPT creator OpenAI and is making a multi-year, multibillion-dollar investment in the company.

This deal represents the third phase of the partnership between the two companies, following Microsoft's previous investments in 2019 and 2021. As Microsoft puts it, this next phase will "accelerate AI breakthroughs to ensure these benefits are broadly shared with the world."

Microsoft has not disclosed the value of its latest investment, but in 2019, it committed $1 billion in partnership with San Francisco-based OpenAI.

"We formed our partnership with OpenAI around a shared ambition to responsibly advance cutting-edge AI research and democratize AI as a new technology platform," Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella wrote. "In this next phase of our partnership, developers and organizations across industries will have access to the best AI infrastructure, models, and toolchain with Azure to build and run their applications."

OpenAI collaborates closely with Microsoft's cloud service, Azure. In 2019, Microsoft's investment made it the exclusive provider of cloud computing services to OpenAI. With the announcement of this new phase of the partnership, Microsoft confirmed that Azure will remain OpenAI's exclusive provider.

The investment will also enable the companies to jointly engage in supercomputing at scale and develop new AI-powered experiences, according to Microsoft's announcement.
