Netflix is one step closer to bringing the Gears of War video game franchise to life with their latest announcement: writer Jon Spaihts has been tapped to pen the script for the highly anticipated live-action feature film.
This announcement marks a significant step forward for the project, which was first announced several months ago when Netflix joined forces with The Coalition to bring the beloved game to the screen.
Spaihts, a writer with an Academy Award nomination under his belt, is well-versed in adapting major genre IPs. He has an impressive track record, having penned scripts for high-profile projects such as The Mummy, Prometheus, The Darkest Hour, and more recently, the Dune franchise and Doctor Strange.
With a staggering 40 million copies sold, the Gears of War video game series has earned a place as a fan favorite among gamers.
If you're not familiar with the franchise, its setting takes place on the planet Sera, where humanity is under threat from the Locust Horde – a race of underground reptilian humanoid creatures. The upcoming live-action movie by Netflix will delve into the tale of Delta Squad – a group of infantry soldiers led by sergeant Marcus Fenix – as they battle the Locusts to save humanity from extinction.
"Gears of War is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates," Spaihts said speaking to Variety. "It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen."
