Ninja Theory: Hellblade 2 Will Make Hellblade Look Like an Indie Game

The studio's co-founder Tameem Antoniades says the new game will be more realistic and believable.

Tameem Antoniades, Ninja Theory's co-founder and creative director, has shared the studio's goals and said that the Hellblade sequel will make the first game look like an indie game.

In an interview with NME, Antoniades talked about the effort the team put into Hellblade 2 to make it the best it can be.

"The goal with Hellblade 2 isn’t to perfect it, but to create an experience that feels more believable and more refined. Its ambition in terms of scale is bigger. I think Hellblade 2 will make Hellblade look like an indie game."

In order to make the game as realistic as possible, the team scouted forty locations in Iceland, created real costumes from recreated pieces of ancient material, and even hired a combat trainer for the lead actor Melina Juergens so that she could perform the combat herself.

"The idea is believability – making things look real or believable – and the best way to do that is to base everything on real things."

Hellblade 2 will also look at the main character's psychosis from a different perspective, will explore the condition in its connection with religion and society.

"Hellblade 2 moves away from this being a personal affliction for Senua and more about how a person like that can change the world."

The work on the game seems to have affected Antoniades as he now wants to explore the bigger picture of game development and mental health,

"My interest is to get outside of that bubble and ask questions like ‘how can we make an impact in mental health by doing a project that’s not games related? How do we make an impact in digital art?’”

Antoniades strives to continue doing what others don’t think of or can’t risk doing. He thinks being part of a big organization opens the doors to taking chances.
