The '90s sitcom-like show is largely generated by AI algorithms.
An unusual show has recently appeared on Twitch – it features weird characters that move clumsily and speak with robotic voices, the dialogues in it are illogical, and the graphics remind of old voxel games. The show is aired 24/7 and its plot is absolutely nonsensical.
The reason why this show is so bizarre is pretty simple – it is mostly created through artificial intelligence algorithms.
The show is dubbed "Nothing, Forever" and it is live-streamed on the Twitch channel watchmeforever created by the media lab Mismatch Media. It draws inspiration from the classic comedy show Seinfeld, featuring similar settings, musical cues, and characters resembling Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer. The scenes mostly take place in the main character's apartment (referred to as "Larry" instead of Jerry) and are separated by a still shot of his apartment building.
According to Nothing, Forever creators, Skyler Hartle and Brian Habersberger, to create the show, they used a combination of machine learning, generative algorithms, and cloud services.
In an interview with Vice, Hartle explained that the dialogue in the show is powered by OpenAI's GPT-3 language model and that human moderation of the stream is minimal, with only GPT-3's built-in moderation filters being utilized. Additionally, the show uses other machine-learning technologies such as DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, and more.
Speaking to Kotaku, Hartle also shared that he and his co-creator have been working on Nothing, Forever part-time for the past four years with a team of between three and seven people. According to them, the concept for the show started as an art project, an AI-generated show that "created 'nothing,' forever, that people could tune into."
The team saw the potential to create something that would run indefinitely and chose the format of '90s sitcoms as the ideal medium to pursue.
"Our goal with this project and our platform is to enable more creators, not less,” Hartle said. “We want people who have limited resources to be able to realize their creative visions, and we think this kind of technology is going to be a backbone for this."
