New World, an open-world MMO built with Amazon Lumberyard, is melting down expensive GPUs from Nvidia as reported by the users who have access to the game's closed beta.
It all started with just a few reports on Reddit: a user wrote that the new game from Amazon bricked their RTX 3090 all of a sudden. The user added that the GPU had previously delivered a perfect performance when processing Cyberpunk in an Ultra graphics quality and crashed at a Medium when playing New World. Later a few more players wrote that they experienced the same issue with their EVGA cards. Some of them thought this was entirely Nvidia's fault saying the GPUs were just "waiting for the right conditions to fail". Turned out the issue was due to a 100% GPU usage when playing Amazon's MMO so naturally the graphics card could not handle this much and started crashing.
The initial idea was that there was no FPS limit for menu screens in the game hence why Nvidia's GPUs had to render over 9000 FPS and fail-safes could not prevent the damage. Amazon has already released a statement addressing the situation and assured the gamers that there would be an FPS limit in the menu screens (where the users experienced bricking) in the future. In the meantime, the team recommends that you do the following to avoid RTX 3090 issues:
- Disable the overrides in the driver settings;
- Make sure to press “APPLY”;
- Restart the game client;
- Additionally, you can cap your FPS.
