Original Xbox One Can Still Run Most Modern Games

Digital Foundry tested the console on Elden Ring, Forza Horizon 5, Far Cry 6, Cyberpunk 2077, and other games.

Digital Foundry checked if the original Xbox One can still run modern games, like Elden Ring, Forza Horizon 5, Far Cry 6, Cyberpunk 2077, Call of Duty Vanguard, Battlefield 2042, The Ascent, and CrossfireX. Long story short: yes, it can.

The original console that was launched in 2013 was compared to Xbox One S. Not surprisingly, the newer version got better results, but the old one is still hanging, although Digital Foundry believes it's time for it to get some rest.

Ultimately, the OG model can handle some games, like Forza Horizon 5 and Grid Legends, pretty well. Others, like Cyberpunk 2077, Call of Duty Vanguard, Battlefield 2042, Elden Ring, and Tales of Arise, suffer from low framerates, stutters, and other performance issues.

For example, Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One shows 20-25 fps but can drop to 15-17 mid-fight. With the stuttering animation, massive judder, and occasional freezes, the game is nearly unplayable on Xbox One.

Elden Ring has similar problems and shows constant stutters and around 20-25 fps, which makes the "already difficult game much harder."

However, it's not always so bad. Forza Horizon 5, for instance, is consistent in its 30 fps with a dynamic 1080p resolution.

The OG console also has slower loading times than One S, and here, the difference also varies. Forza Horizon 5 loads for 144.6 seconds, which is 35.4% slower than on the newer console. Other games are not so dramatic though: The Ascent takes 162.7 seconds to load (1.6% slower), Far Cry 6 – 58.4 (11.9%), CrossfireX – 78.7 (5.9%), and Cyberpunk 2077 – 50.0 (1.6%).

Overall, Digital Foundry believes that, while Xbox One can still run most new games, it should be left behind because the new titles trying to support last-gen consoles will lead to worse performance.
