PlayStation 5 Sales Reach 32 Million Units

The third quarter of Sony's fiscal year 2022 saw growth in PS5 shipments as well as an increase in the operating income of the company's gaming division.

Sony has released a new financial report for Q3 2022 (the three months that ended December 31, 2022) revealing that it shipped 7.1 million units of PlayStation 5 during that period which brings lifetime sales of the console to 32.1 million units.

The 7.1 figure represents an 83% increase compared to Q3 2021 which is attributed to increased supply and better availability in stores. In addition, total sales of PS5 during the first three quarters of Sony's FY2022 amounted to 12.8 million which represents a 34% year-over-year growth and is the highest result the console has achieved in a fiscal year.

The PS Plus subscriber base was 46.4 million people in the third quarter, which is a dip of 1.6 million compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. Meanwhile, the monthly active users of PlayStation have slightly increased to 112 million from 111 million in Q3 2021.

In terms of software sales, PS4 and PS5 combined sales were 86.5 million units, which is a decline of 6.2 million compared to the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. Nevertheless, sales of software from internal studios have surged to 20.8 million units, an increase of 9.5 million from the previous fiscal year's equivalent quarter.

On a positive note, Sony reported a 25% growth in the operating income of its gaming division, however, the overall operating income of the company dipped by 8.5%.
