Redshift Will Become a Subscription-Only Product in August

Maxon announced that perpetual licensing for Redshift will be replaced by rental-only licensing on August 30, 2021.

At the moment, the price for the node-locked perpetual license is $500. Those who have recently bought the software will have access to all the latest builds of Redshift for a year since the date of the purchase. Then the users can either convert to subscription or "extend the Annual Maintenance Agreement to a maximum expiration date of August 31, 2024."

There is another change coming up — starting August, 30 the Cinema 4D-only version of the software will no longer be available. Right now, the cost of perpetual license for Cinema 4D R23 is $3495.00 while the cost of a monthly subscription is $59.91.

Maxon team explains that the new licensing plan is there to ensure all users have access to the latest version of Redshift: "In order to maintain compatibility with the latest hardware, drivers and host application updates our Redshift development team is constantly updating, optimizing, and ensuring stability. In order to provide the best customer experience, we believe all customers should be running on the latest version."

With the current perpetual license, the users only have one year of maintenance included which means after a year the agreement has to be extended (and this costs $250 for Node-Locked and $300 for Floating) so they can continue receiving updates and support.

The prices for the newly introduced licenses have not been announced yet.
