Sega Is Seemingly Teasing a New Cosmic Smash Game

SEGA has launched a teaser website titled "csmashvrs" which presumably hints at the revival of its arcade and Dreamcast game, Cosmic Smash.

Sega seems to be hinting at the release of a new installment of its arcade and Dreamcast game, Cosmic Smash.

On Monday, the company's social media accounts started teasing the mysterious word "cmashvrs" with the phrase "Eye c sth forming," which presumably means "I see something forming." This teaser leads to an official website that is currently featuring a countdown timer and a playable Breakout-style minigame.

The gameplay and color scheme of the minigame, which is gray, black, and orange, may suggest that a Cosmic Smash revival will be announced soon – the countdown timer on the website will end on February 13.

What's also interesting here is that musician Ken Ishii, who is well-known among video game enthusiasts for his music featured in Sega games Rez and Q Entertainment's Lumines 2, retweeted the teaser shortly after it was posted by Sega. The music on the Cosmic Smash teaser website also sounds similar to Ishii's style, further strengthening the likelihood of a Cosmic Smash revival.

The meaning behind the "vrs" in "cmashvrs" is currently unclear. It could stand for "versus", "VR", or something else entirely. However, the fact that Wolf & Wood, the studio that developed the VR title The Last Worker also retweeted the teaser is notable.

Cosmic Smash was initially released in Japan in 2001 for arcades, Sega's NAOMI platform, and Dreamcast. The game was a unique single-player experience that combined racquetball and the gameplay of other arcade video games, Breakout and Arkanoid.
