Sony Says There's a "Good Chance" PS VR2 Will Outsell the Original

The company believes the VR market will experience significant growth and its recently-released VR headset will gain bigger popularity than the original PS VR.

Sony has recently stated that it believes there is a "good chance" that the recently-released PlayStation VR2 will surpass its predecessor in terms of sales.

According to Sony, the first version of PlayStation VR, which was released in October 2016 for the PS4, had sold five million units by the end of 2019.

The latest iteration, which is only compatible with the PS5 and costs $550, was released last month. Shortly before the headset's release, Bloomberg reported that Sony had to revise its expectations for the PlayStation VR2 and reduce its shipment forecast after disappointing pre-orders. According to the report, the company initially aimed to release two million units in the first quarter, but it then scaled back its goal to one million.

Sony, however, later denied this rumor saying that it has "not cut PlayStation VR2 production numbers" and that it is "seeing enthusiasm from PlayStation fans for the upcoming launch."

Now, during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference (via VGC), Sony executive deputy president and chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki expressed a strong belief that the device is able to outsell the original PS VR.

"We are very happy to launch VR2 on PS5. VR1, we sold over five million units, and I think we have a good chance to exceed that amount with PlayStation VR2," he said

Totoki mentioned projections that suggest the VR market could experience significant growth in the media and entertainment industry in the first half of this decade and expressed optimism that if these forecasts prove to be true, there is a "good potential" for both the VR/AR market and the development of technology in this field.

PlayStation VR2 launched on February 22. The headset was released along with over 30 titles that were available at launch, including Horizon Call of the Mountain, Gran Turismo 7, and Resident Evil Village.
