Spider-Man No Way Home VFX Breakdown

Digital Domain's VFX Supervisor talked about working on the fight between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus.

Digital Domain's VFX Supervisor Scott Edelstein told BBC Click how the fight between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus was shot.

As the shooting took place in the middle of the pandemic, they couldn't film anything on location, so a team was sent to do some photographic reference. Edelstein said that most of the shooting with real actors was done in Atlanta on a stage.

A 200-foot long piece of highway with real cars was built, and that's where Tom Holland and Alfred Molina were fighting each other, while the team had to fill in the environment around that, matching the reference photos with the CG environment.

Most of the scene was made with a lot of CGI: Holland's suit, Doctor's arms, sometimes even entire frames.

"Most of the time when you see Doc Ock, a full-body frame of him or even a mid-body frame of him, he's usually all CG from the neck down. And sometimes, [we] even had to reproduce his hair and put digital hair on him just get the sense of motion that he's moving quickly forward or doing some kind of action that he wasn't really doing."
