The Last of Us Multiplayer Game Is Naughty Dog's "Most Ambitious Project" Ever, Druckmann Says

Neil Druckmann believes that the upcoming multiplayer The Last of Us title is "the most ambitious project" Naughty Dog has ever done.

Naughty Dog's co-president and creative director of The Last of Us Neil Druckmann has recently shared that he believes the upcoming standalone multiplayer The Last of Us game is "the most ambitious project" the studio has ever done.

Speaking to ComicBook, Druckmann said that Naughty Dog has been working on the project for "a long time" adding that the studio started developing it before The Last of Us Part II was released in 2020.

"There is The Last of Us multiplayer project that we’ve been working on for a long time, since even before The Last of Us Part 2 shipped," Druckmann said. "And that’s the most ambitious project we’ve ever done. We’re expanding the world even further, continuing to tell a story, but in a multiplayer space."

Initially, The Last of Us Part II was supposed to have an updated version of the Factions multiplayer mode from the first game, however, in 2019, Naughty Dog revealed that the expansion of the planned mode became too extensive to include with the main story.

While the new standalone multiplayer game hasn't been officially revealed yet, the developer has posted two pieces of concept art to date teasing the new project as well as recently said that it will share more details about the game later this year. At the time, Druckmann also noted that the multiplayer game is "shaping up to be a fresh, new experience from our studio, but one rooted in Naughty Dog’s passion for delivering incredible stories, characters, and gameplay."

Elsewhere in the interview with ComicBook, the studio head also explained why the studio is keeping its next project under wraps saying that Naughty Dog's previous experience with announcing their titles far ahead of their launches has hurt the studio.
