Unreal Has Celebrated Its 25th Birthday

The legendary game that gave us Unreal Engine has celebrated its quarter-century anniversary.

In case you missed it, Unreal, a first-person shooter developed by Epic MegaGames, now Epic Games, and Digital Extremes and published by GT Interactive all the way back in 1998, has recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Released on May 22 quarter of a century ago, the game would eventually give birth to the Unreal franchise, the legendary Unreal Tournament, and, of course, the renowned Unreal Engine, initially created for the game in question. Now, 25 years later, Unreal's legacy lives on and prospers, with Epic Games continuing to enhance the game's engine and shipping Unreal Engine 5.2 earlier this month.

3D Motion Designer Jose Saez-Merino celebrated the occasion in a truly artistic way, showcasing a gorgeous nostalgia-inducing animation meant to "relive the experience of playing [Unreal] for the first time on a May afternoon in 1998". According to Jose, the animation was set up using Cinema 4D, OctaneRender, GSG3D's textures, and custom made textures. You can check out the full animation attached above or by visiting Jose's Twitter page.
