World of Anterra: an Upcoming Indie Open-World RPG

The adventure by 81monkeys is inspired by classic games.

Have a look at World of Anterra – an upcoming open-world RPG inspired by classic games, like Skyrim, Ultima, and Zelda, and developed by 81monkeys. The developers describe it as "the type of game only an independent studio could make."

In development for over three years, World of Anterra offers an "endlessly explorable" open world, deep progression systems, fast-paced combat, and rich lore. 81monkeys promise a world full of life, with the NPCs living their routine lives while also responding dynamically to events in the world and the player. Expect a vast world with oceans, continents, regions, castles and towns, mountains, caves, and dungeons.

Each player's experience will be different as the story and quests follow non-linear paths, so your story will unfold unlike any other, based on the paths you choose to follow. The studio prides itself on the game's interface: "Instead of menus and lists, we leveraged true-to-our-world items and intuitive icons to create a wonderful user experience."

World of Anterra uses an inquiry-based system that requires the player to always ask questions, even self-made, which makes the dialogues succinct and allows for a completely non-linear conversation experience.

World of Anterra introduces a streamlined grid-based combat system. While it can be a simple action game, it has the depth and strategy needed to overcome difficult enemies. The developers automated simple actions to speed up combat and made sure the character always targets the closest or most recent enemy and chooses the simplest path to get there, so you can move and attack with just one button press.

If this is not enough for you, 81monkeys is also developing QTEs and accessibility features that allow you to tailor the whole combat experience to your liking.

Aside from swinging your sword, you can fish, hunt, gather resources, cook, craft, build, look for treasure maps and faeries, and do detective work.

The game will have multiplayer designed to let players "hop" in and out of each other's worlds, adventure together or separately, and trade goods.

81monkeys opened a Kickstarter campaign for World of Anterra, so you can support it there. The game will be available for PC, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch in 2023.
