A $200 piece of metal that can show you animations from Fallout 4 and serve as an alarm clock.
Ahead of the premiere of Amazon's Fallout TV series, set to air next month, Bethesda officially unveiled Fallout: New Vegas 2 its new merch – a 1:1 replica of the upcoming show's version of Pip-Boy, created in collaboration with The Wand Company.
Constructed from die-cast metal and injection-molded ABS, the real-world Pip-Boy comes with a memory foam cuff for added comfort and universal fit. It also features an operational TFT LCD monochrome green display that mirrors the color scheme from Fallout 3 and 4. On the inside, the device is equipped with a rechargeable Li-Po battery that can be charged via USB-C.
Regarding its functionalities, unfortunately, they are quite limited, lacking Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and smartphone connectivity and narrowing down the replica's utility to either a cosplay accessory or an oversized and bulky wristwatch. According to Bethesda's announcement, the device can display the time and act as an unusual alarm clock when placed on a display stand shipped alongside the gadget.
However, its most significant functionality lies in its ability to showcase over 50 animations, which can be accessed by turning the control dial on the side of the casing. The real-life Pip-Boy is priced at $200 and is set to hit the shelves in November 2024.
If you've been involved in the gaming industry for at least a decade or have watched Internet Historian's video covering the topic, you probably have already heard a thing or two about Bethesda's official merchandise.
The Internet still remembers vividly the "Canvas Bag" fiasco and the "Nuka Dark Rum" controversy that took place around 2018, when Bethesda underdelivered, to put it mildly, on its promises and shipped products that were far from what was shown in the ads, disappointing many fans to such an extent that several lawsuits for false advertising were reportedly filed against the developer.
While we remain hopeful and believe that the studio has learned from past mistakes and won't repeat such blunders, it's essential to highlight a small and easy-to-miss line of text in the official announcement saying that "the product images and descriptions are representative of current samples" and "changes may be made to final products".
