Check Out This New Game About Underwater Exploration

Under the Waves, a melancholy tale imaged by Parallel Studio, is now available for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.

On August 29, 2023, Quantic Dream and Parallel Studio launched Under the Waves, the new narrative adventure game, which was created in collaboration with Surfrider Foundation Europe in order to raise awareness of human impact on the oceans.

The game allows players to dive into a poetic story and feel the engulfing power of grief. The action takes place in an alternative, retro-futuristic version of 1979, to be more accurate, in the depths of the North Sea.

The Under The Waves' narrative reveals itself through professional diver Stan's daily missions, whether aboard his submarine or in his self-contained suit. Stan is a professional diver who does some maintenance work for an oil company. Trying to escape from his past, he finds his peace and solitude in a far-from-everyday life underwater. As he confronts inexplicable events, he will gradually begin to question the very nature of his own reality.

The game gives its players a chance to explore the deep sea, visit shipwrecks, collect materials to recycle in the life module, and craft new items to be used in the various main and secondary quests.

Speaking of the origins of the project, here is what Ronan Coiffec, the Co-Founder and Game Director of Parallel Studio, says: "I feel like I've fulfilled several dreams through Under The Waves, working on a meaningful game with a talented team, in collaboration with Surfrider Foundation Europe in particular, and working with Quantic Dream."

He reflected on the incredible and emotionally rich three years of production for Under The Waves. Ronan Coiffec mentioned the project's journey from its inception, through the challenges faced during the COVID period and remote meetings with Writer/Director David Cage from Quantic Dream to shape the narrative.

He also highlighted collaborations with Surfrider to define key story messages, as well as motion capture, voice recording, and lighting adjustments guided by the expertise of the Quantic Dream teams. Through this process, the team gained valuable experiences and knowledge that nourished the project. He hopes that players will be deeply moved by the passion, generosity, and sincerity poured into creating a unique, meaningful, and captivating gaming experience.

The project was first unveiled back in June at Summer Games Fest 2023. Alongside Under The Waves, Quantic Dream also announced its new publishing label, Spotlight by Quantic Dream, and Lysfanga: The Time Shift Warrior, a hack'n'slash game developed by Sand Door Studio.
