Interact with Cute Characters on Your Computer Using This Free Software

"They can sit on top of windows, jump between windows, or play with the mouse."

Some nice additions to your plain desktop sound like a great idea - how about some cute interactive characters? Meet Desktop Mate, “a next-generation desktop mascot platform that brings cute characters to your computer.”

It’s free software presented by infiniteloop on Steam, with which adorable cartoonish characters interact with you and your apps in various ways. For example, you can set them on top of windows or at the bottom right of the screen; if there is more than one window open, they’ll jump between them. When hovering a cursor over them, they’ll present heart symbols as a response.

If you drag the window to move it, they’ll move together to stay with it. The characters can be linked to the alarm function, “allowing you to keep track of time while having fun!” Also, there is a choice to change their size, to make them smaller or larger depending on how you want them to be, and to change the graphics and language settings.

When you feel distracted and need to focus, move them to the far left side of the screen. They will hide there until the cursor moves back and they will reappear.

The basic game is free, as mentioned earlier, and offers Aiel-tan, the official image character of Infinite Loop. The paid DLC will gain you access to Miku Hatsune, the world's most popular virtual singer. In the future, you can expect more characters, new interactions, and additional useful functions to be added.

Download Desktop Mate here and follow the creator infiniteloop on X/Twitter to be notified when new characters are added.
