NVIDIA Announces DLSS 4 with Multi-Frame Generation

While all RTX GPUs will receive DLSS 4, the multi-frame generation feature will be supported only on the RTX 50 lineup.

During NVIDIA's CES 2025 presentation, hosted by CEO Jensen Huang, NVIDIA officially announced DLSS 4, featuring multi-frame generation technology. Before we go straight to details, check out details on the company's next-generation GPUs showcased at the event – the RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5070.
Why is DLSS multi-frame generation important? The new tech generates up to three additional frames for every traditionally rendered frame, potentially increasing frame rates in games by up to eight times. For example, the team states that in Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, the new model increased performance by 10% while using 400 MB less memory at 4K resolution with maximum graphical settings.

The AI-driven frame generation model is said to be 40% faster, use 30% less video memory, and require rendering only once per frame to generate multiple frames.

At launch, multi-frame generation will be supported in 75 games and apps. NVIDIA also shared some impressive stats from games. Cyberpunk 2077 ran at 238 FPS on an RTX 5090 with DLSS 4, compared to 106 FPS on an RTX 4090 with DLSS 3.5, both with full ray tracing enabled.

Among other things, NVIDIA has also improved technologies like DLSS Ray Reconstruction, DLSS Super Resolution, and DLAA. The tech now uses transformer architecture, the foundation for advanced AI models like ChatGPT and Gemini, to offer better temporal stability, fewer visual artifacts, and more detailed motion rendering.

The previous major update, DLSS 3, was launched two years ago, focusing on frame generation for enhanced performance. In August 2023, NVIDIA launched DLSS 3.5, featuring AI-based ray reconstruction technology.
