Saints Row Reboot Hits Franchise Low, Selling Under 2M Copies

The reason behind why this 30-year-old studio was closed seems to be quite clear now.

The reboot of the popular Saints Row franchise seems to have missed the mark, turning in what appears to be the weakest sales performance in the series' history. Twitter user Timur222 spotted a post from Former Volition community and social media manager, Tyrin Stevenson, who revealed via LinkedIn that the game sold a mere 1.7 million units.

Compared to its predecessors, this figure seems pretty lackluster. Saints Row The Third, the superstar of the series, sold a total of 5.5 million copies, and Saints Row 2 wasn't far behind with 3.4 million sales. Well, even the OG Saints Row, which was only available on Xbox 360, managed to outsell the reboot with sales of over 2 million copies.

Official sales numbers for Saints Row 4 have not been publicly disclosed in recent years. However, what we do heard of is that the game was quite successful upon its release in 2013. It sold over one million copies in its first week alone.

Looking at the reboot, since the release of the game, it has received an overwhelmingly negative response, triggering a severe backlash that led to a steep 7% overnight plunge in Embracer's stock price. This resulted in a strategic pivot towards investment optimization for the company. Not long after, 30-year-old Volition was forced to close its doors last September.
As we conclude this article, we revisit the question posed earlier: What do you think led to the shutdown of Volition studio? With the evidence at hand, the answer appears to be self-evident.
