During the latest SEGA earnings presentation for Q2, the company reported that sales of Sonic Superstars were not meeting expectations. Company president Haruki Satomi explained to investors that the game faced tough competition from other major releases like Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Marvel's Spider-Man 2, which were launched around the same time.

Satomi also highlighted that Sonic Superstars has received higher Metacritic scores than Sonic Frontiers, and the company remains optimistic about the potential for increased sales.

"Both the Metacritic score and user score are higher than Sonic Frontiers, and we would like to continue to sell firmly," he added.

Satomi noted that Sonic games typically perform better during the holiday season, with the company allocating "90% of the title's marketing cost" to this period. Sonic Superstars was released on October 17 for PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, just three days before the release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Despite the initial sales disappointment, SEGA is now focusing on increasing sales during the holiday season and remains hopeful about the game's future performance.

"We believe that the impact of other companies' major titles released at the same time is significant, but we plan to expand the promotion towards the holiday season, especially in the overseas market," stated Satomi.
