Updates on The Binding of Isaac Creators' New Project

Mewgenics is undergoing internal testing, will soon receive a new trailer, and has its core content ready, along with more surprises.

It’s been almost two years since we last covered Mewgenics, an upcoming turn-based roguelike created by Edmund McMillen, the creator of hit indie titles like The Binding Of Isaac and Super Meat Boy. Now is a good time to catch up on the game's development.

If you missed our previous coverage of this upcoming title, which the developer Edmund McMillen described as "the most exciting game" he's ever developed, In Mewgenics, you’d hoard, breed, train, mutate, and set cats out on epic adventures over hundreds of hours of gameplay. The developers promise several classes, more than 50 abilities, a lot of unique items, and over 200 enemies and bosses.

In the latest community blog posted today on Steam, the team shares some updates on the game’s development status. It’s great to hear that all of the game’s core content is ready, and there are only three final bosses to design, draw, and animate and five enemies to work on. Soon, long-awaited fans can expect a new teaser trailer, which is being filmed and will probably drop after the new year. Also, if you’d like to dig further into the gameplay and its core loop, the developer has it explained in detail via this community post, too.

Another promising sign is that internal testing has been conducted within the team. As per their test, it seems that it’ll take around 8 to 10 hours to meet the first house boss of the many in the game.

If you would rather watch footage than read the introduction, we’ve got you covered. Below, you can find some cool animations, spells, UI panels, and more:

The game was initially scheduled to be released this year, but fans might need to wait a bit longer now that the developer has updated the community that it will be moved to mid of next year. To follow up on the game’s development, you can follow the developers, McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, on X/Twitter or wishlist the game on Steam and check out the community updates there.
