Black Myth: Wukong Draws Tourists to Its Real-Life Locations

It's probably the most significant game for the country.

Game Science

Black Myth: Wukong launched with a boom, attracting over 2.2 million concurrent players on Steam, which made it the most popular single-player game there. It was received extremely well, drawing fans to Chinese culture and boosting tourism in the country.

According to the Shanxi Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism (via Global Times), Black Myth: Wukong features 36 filming locations across China, and 27 of them are in the Shanxi province. Search activity for Shanxi rose 10% when the game was released, while locations like Datong and Shuozhou were searched for 20% more.

"Ticket orders for the Xiaoxitian scenic spot (one of the filming locations) rose by 236 percent compared to the same period of last year," Global Times said.

The online travel platform Fliggy reported that interest in Shanxi doubled compared to the previous month, "with sites like Yuhuang Temple, Chongfu Temple, Xixian Xiaoxitian, Tiefo Temple, and Shuanglin Temple seeing significant spikes in popularity," shared CGTN.

This should be great news for China's economy (not so sure about those who live there, though), welcomed by local authorities.

"Since 2022, we have coordinated promotional activities with the game developers at key moments, which already attracted some attention. Now that the game has launched, its high-tech and digital presentation not only breathes new life into Shanxi's ancient architecture but also opens new avenues for the province's cultural tourism industry," said a representative of Shanxi Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism (via CGTN).
