Discord Betrays Users' Trust by Adding Ads

The company will reportedly introduce sponsored ads despite standing against them in the past.

Discord is known as a convenient hub for gamers and even educators, providing its services for free. Even after introducing paid Nitro benefits, it stayed true to its CEO's words of sharing a "comfortable and safe" platform free of ads.

Well, that policy might end soon. According to The Wall Street Journal, Discord will add sponsored ads trying to increase its revenue.

Against the current layoff trends, the company will hire "more than a dozen people for ad-sales positions." No wonder, Discord has increased its revenue to $600 million already, which is "quadruple from what it made in 2020."

The ads will be based on the user's geographic location, age, and gameplay. You will see them in the bottom left corner of your screen. There should be an option to turn them off in the settings, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were possible with Nitro only.

Now, you might think it's an April Fool's Day joke, and I can't blame you, but The Wall Street Journal's article was published on March 30, so it's unlikely. All we can do is wait for Discord to address the issue and possibly abandon the plan after the backlash. Otherwise, say hello to TeamSpeak again.
