Nintendo Discussed the Switch 2 Console With Activision in 2022

The upcoming handheld promises to offer performance similar to PS4 and Xbox One.

Internal emails recently shared as part of the FTC vs. Microsoft case have revealed that Nintendo discussed its upcoming next-gen handheld console, commonly referred to as Nintendo Switch 2, with Activision all the way back in December 2022, nearly two years ahead of the console's expected launch, set to take place in the second half of 2024.

According to the documents published by The Verge, Nintendo higher-ups held an in-person meeting last year to brief Activision executives, including CEO Bobby Kotick, about the upcoming Nintendo Switch successor. Following the meeting, Activision's Chris Schnakenberg prepared an internal document titled "NG Switch Draft.pdf," summarizing information about the upcoming handheld. Although the document has significant redactions, it was revealed that the Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to have performance capabilities closer to that of Generation 8 consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One.

"Given the closer alignment to Gen8 platforms in terms of performance and our previous offerings on PS4/Xbox One, it is reasonable to assume we could make something compelling for the NG Switch as well," reads the document. "It would be helpful to secure early access to development hardware prototypes and prove that out nice and early."

Previously, there were reports of Nintendo unveiling its next-generation console at the gamescom 2023 event held last month. However, this presentation was conducted discreetly, taking place behind closed doors and exclusively for a handpicked group of developers.

According to the reports, Nintendo privately showcased specially prepared tech demos to the invited developers. One of these demos was allegedly an enhanced version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, redesigned to fully exploit the new console's improved specifications.

Another report, shared by VGC, suggested that Nintendo demonstrated Epic Games' 2021 tech demo for Unreal Engine 5, The Matrix Awakens, running smoothly on their upcoming console. The demo reportedly delivered visuals comparable to those of Sony's and Microsoft's current-generation consoles.
