Overwatch 2 Is Getting Rid of Yet Another PvE Mode

And I'm honestly fine with it.

Overwatch 2 received its fair share of player rage when Blizzard announced that the PvE content, which was the selling point of the whole sequel, would not appear in the game. "Unfortunately, the effort required to pull all of that together into a Blizzard-quality experience that we can ship to you is huge, and there really is no end in sight or defined kind of end date where we can put that out into the world," said executive producer Jared Neuss back then.

However, there still were some PvE elements, like paid missions and the Hero Mastery Gauntlet – a multiplayer mode that basically tests your character skill. Alas, the latter is also going to leave Overwatch as players didn't seem as interested in it as Blizzard had hoped.

"Hero Mastery Gauntlet was intended to bring the high score-chasing excitement of Hero Mastery missions into a multiplayer format. Unfortunately, it hasn’t resonated with players in the ways that we hoped. With this in mind, we have decided to discontinue Hero Mastery Gauntlet as a permanent mode, and it will not be available to play starting in Season 11."

You now have until the end of Season 10 to complete the Lifetime Challenges for Hero Mastery Gauntlet and get to the top of the leaderboards. The solo version of the mode is still available and more courses will be coming in future seasons.

I personally never played this mode and I'm not interested in Hero Mastery at all, so I'm not sad to see it go. However, this is yet another PvE content that has been scrapped. This shouldn't be surprising, though, as Bloomberg reported some troubles in this department in March. I bet Story Missions will be eliminated soon as well because I can't see many people paying for such a game mode.

Well, at least everybody can finally play all heroes for free. Let's hope that whatever comes to replace the Gauntlet won't require spending money.

The closure of the mode is understandable as it still needs maintenance and developers spending time and effort on the part of the game that nobody plays.
