PlayerUnknown Production's New Project Will Be an Earth-Sized Metaverse

Artemis, the project that Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene's new studio is working on, will be an Earth-size metaverse based on blockchain technologies and NFTs.

The news that PlayerUnknown Productions, the new studio created by Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene, who is known as one of the key developers behind the Battle Royale genre, is working on Artemis, an ambitious title that is set to be an Earth-size virtual world, has become known last year.

At the time, Green described the game as a giant world that exists not as a place where anything can happen and a sort of experience that people have dreamed of for years but that have never been able to make before.

And now, Green has shared some more details on the upcoming title. Speaking to Hit Points, the developer once again reminded us that Artemis is going to be a big online game in which he wants to recreate a virtual world the size of the planet Earth where an unprecedented number of players will be able to do anything they want – not only participate in battles and have survival experiences but also play games of any kinds and genres as well as do things which are not games at all.

So, basically, Green's master plan is to build a kind of metaverse with various games and other experiences. While Green himself doesn't use this term while describing the game, he said that he doesn't mind if people would refer to Artemis as the metaverse.

"It’s this thing that we want to create, and it’s going to give people a lot of fun, a lot of pleasure, and a lot of meaningful things to do. But it doesn’t matter if it’s called the metaverse. I don’t care what people want to call it," he said.

While metaverse is usually associated with blockchain, Web3, and NFTs, Green says that Artemis will not be specifically built around these technologies and will not be intended to be a new way for brands to advertise to consumers. He claims that hat the developers are creating the project primarily in order to have a platform for players to have fun, and not for personal gain.

However, still Artemis is planned to be a digital space that "has to have an economy, and it has to have systems at work." So, when it's ready players will be able to do whatever activity they want as well as benefit from the sale of items.

"I do believe you should be able to extract value from a digital place; it has to be like the internet, where you can do stuff that will earn you money," Green said. "But it’s not about, like, Chanel and Louis Vuitton. It’s some kid called AwesomePickle selling cool skins because he understands what people want."

Prior to Artemis' release, PlayerUnknown Productions will launch a demo called Prologue, which will demonstrate a part of the content, systems, and open world. In terms of gameplay, it will be a minimalist "survivor", which over time will be developed into a full-fledged metaverse.
