PSP Emulator Could Appear in App Store If New Rules Allow It

Apple lifting restrictions from emulating retro games still has some blind spots.

Apple recently lifted restrictions from emulating retro games, which opened the App Store doors for old titles meant for other devices. If you'd like to play a PSP game, PPSSPP is the emulator for you, and its developer Henrik Rydgård will be happy to release it for iOS, but the rules are still not very clear.

Apple said that "retro game console emulator apps can offer to download games" but "links must be provided to all downloadable software." Since Rydgård doesn't have rights to PSP games, users have to get them on their own, and this whole scheme might go against Apple's guidelines. So it all depends on how the company interprets its own rules.

"If it turns out that the rules now allow emulators with ISO/ROM pickers, PPSSPP will come to the App Store later this year. If not, well, it won't!"

Meanwhile, Android phones have no such issues, and you can download PPSSPP from Google Play. It's also available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Quest. The iOS version is there as well, but it requires some "hacks".

While we're waiting for Rydgård to find more details about new rules, check out the original message here and join our 80 Level Talent platform and our Telegram channel, follow us on InstagramTwitter, and LinkedIn, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.
