Confirmed: Alan Wake 2 Is Not Coming to Steam, According to Epic Games CEO

UPD: Tim Sweeney has confirmed to 80 Level that the response is indeed his, making Will's screenshot legitimate.

UPD: Tim Sweeney has confirmed to 80 Level that the response is indeed his, making it official that Alan Wake 2 is not coming to Steam.

"Thanks for checking," Sweeney told us in his email. "In general, one should not trust claimed email responses as they are super easy to fake."

Original article: Ever since it was revealed last November that Remedy's 2023 survival horror Alan Wake 2 had sold 1.8 million copies and hadn't recouped its production costs, many fans believed the game still had an ace up its sleeve and could achieve its financial goals by launching on Steam after its exclusivity deal with Epic Games – Alan Wake 2's publisher – expired. However, it appears that won't be the case anytime soon, as a screenshot that recently went viral seemingly confirms that Alan Wake 2 will not launch on Valve's marketplace in the foreseeable future.

Remedy

As shared by a Reddit user named Will (via Pirat_Nation), he reportedly reached out directly to Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney to ask about the release of Alan Wake 2 on Steam, explaining that he isn't a fan of the Epic Games Store and would prefer to either wait for the Steam version or buy an Xbox copy. Sweeney's response was brief, with the CEO confirming that the game "is not coming to Steam," putting an end to the hopes of those who wanted to avoid installing EGS and play the game on PC.

"I am very interested in buying Alan Wake 2. But I am not a fan of the Epic Games Store, so I'd rather wait for it to launch on Steam," the author wrote. "Will this happen within the next year or two? If not, I'll probably just end up buying in on Xbox (but I'd like to play on PC with everything maxed out). I understand Epic funded the game, but I'm sure you guys would make a lot of money if it eventually launched on Steam."

As proof that the screenshot is legitimate, Will shared a screenshot of an email he supposedly received from Sweeney in 2019, also in response to Will's question about EGS exclusivity. "I'm 2/2 on emails to Tim Sweeney," the Reddit user boasted:

At the time of writing, the CEO has yet to officially confirm that Alan Wake 2 is not coming to Steam, so it's wise to take the screenshot with a hefty pinch of salt. If a confirmation does come eventually, it could mean the game may continue recouping its costs at a pace slower than anticipated, despite the Generally Favorable reviews it has received from players.

I loathe Epic Games for bringing exclusives to PC gaming. They are very anti-consumer and the store is still lacking.

I simply won't buy Alan Wake 2. Piraxy is always an option in cases like these.

the anon who basically said, "duh", is correct here. Epic essentially gave Remedy a blank check for AW1R+AW2 development. the only way either is coming to Steam is if Remedy eventually buys back publishing rights, but Epic has no reason to agree to that when, 1) they have only just broken even on its ludicrous budget (that's why it only just broke even—Epic gave Remedy like a 20,000th of their Fortnite dollars, lol), and 2) it is the only external project they've got to their name as a publisher until the new ones from genDESIGN and PLAYDEAD release.

not to be unkind, but you would have to be entirely unmoored from reality to think that the timeline for AW2 coming to Steam is a matter of 1-2 years and not AT LEAST 5—as with Remedy buying back Control's publishing from 505, iirc. (and buying back AW1 from Microsoft took way longer than 5, if memory serves me correctly.) probably much longer than that, though, as AW2 has been an incredible success critically and commercially for being a niche game with such a lofty budget. why would Epic agree to severing ties NOW, of all times? lol

you can dislike the EGS all you want, but be reasonable. Epic ARE the publishers in this case, it's not just a limited exclusivity deal. they are a huge part of why the game exists as it does. which is not to say that you should thank them or whatever, but to point out that the cards are on their table. be real.

Literally only hurting their own sales with this decision, I’d buy the game a 2nd time on pc in a heartbeat if it was on steam.

After using the epic store a few times for a couple games, I probably won’t anymore. Just not a fan of it overall and like another person pointed out in their comment, it’s like turning pc gaming into the fragmented landscape that is streaming currently 🤢

It's funny because Steam gamers often enjoy collecting games, buying them and then not even playing. Epic knows that & they don't want to take part of.
Like everyone else here, I was ready to purchase the game as soon as it dropped on Steam to try it for some hours at most. But I guess I won’t be buying it at all. I imagine by the year 2035 Epic will finally add that wishlist feature to its launcher everyone is asking for. Lmao, they're such a joke

Funny, because that's also exactly why I'm not playing it. Seems like a good game, oh well.

Sounds like Epic just wants to stay irrelevant. Steam is the standard, people aren't switching without significant issues internally. Epic doesn't have a good UI and everything I already play isn't on their platform. AW isnt even that good of a series but this shows it won't ever be more than a footnote thanks to Epic unwavering desire to be a platform they are not.

To the one who downvoted my comment mentioning that Epic is the *publisher* of this game. Show that same energy towards Valve for not releasing Half-Life Alyx onto the Epic Games Store. Of course Valve isn't going to do that. But I don't see you going after Valve for that. I don't know why people were expecting this game to be on Steam.
