Rumor: Valve Is Working with AMD to Make Its Own Home Console

Allegedly powered by RX 9070, it can compete with Xbox Series and PS5.

At the end of 2024, we heard rumors that Valve was working on its own home console. Now, a new report claims that it will be powered by AMD's upcoming GPU to rival Xbox Series and PS5.

According to content creator eXtas1s, Valve is working on drivers for AMD's RX 9070 graphics cards, which will feature RDNA 4, designed for desktops, and FSR 4. eXtas1s's source Rafa claims that Valve is interested in optimizing the drivers for the GPU because it wants to use it in its console, powered by SteamOS.

Alternatively, Valve is creating an external GPU for the Steam Deck 2 or providing support so that third-party companies can develop their own SteamOS-based home consoles. "All signs point in the same direction: Valve wants to be in living rooms."

As usual, take it with a pinch of salt, but if it's true, this could be big for gamers and a huge threat to Microsoft and Sony. If Valve's console supports games already in your Steam library, this is a huge leverage against competitors who require you to buy games. At the same time, AMD's latest technology is a great boost to the console's productivity, placing it in an advantageous position.

Valve has been busy lately: just a month ago, Lenovo announced that its new handheld, Lenovo Legion Go S, is the first third-party console powered by SteamOS. Then, I wondered if we would see a Windows competitor from the company, but it looks like there is another thing coming before that.

This isn't the first time the company thought about a game box: there were Steam Machines back in the day, which, sadly, died, mostly due to SteamOS's Linux base. Hopefully, this time, Valve will figure something out.

Valve needs to go public so Joe & Jane Everyday can get in on a slice of that sweet Steam pie.
