Someone Finally Imagines Second-Person View & It Looks Marvelous

In JAM2GO's recent UE5-made prototype, every move the player makes is monitored by CCTV cameras.

While most people are familiar with first-person and third-person perspectives and their differences from one another, the concept of a second-person view is much less common in video games and can be difficult to visualize due to how obscure and rare it is. Recently, Developer and Digital Artist James Dalzell Hodge, known online as JAM2GO, showcased a game prototype that illustrates one of the ways how a second-person perspective might be implemented in a game.

Set up in Unreal Engine 5, JAM2GO's prototype involves viewing the player character through a multitude of CCTV cameras that follow the player's every move. According to the author, the experience feels a lot like old-school Resident Evil games with their fixed camera angles but "without the tank controls".

"I have the player movement completely separate from the camera position," comments the creator. "So holding a direction will keep you moving in that direction even from different camera angles. It's a little confusing to control at first but it works well!"

While it can be argued that this is not a true second-person view but rather a diegetic third-person perspective – as reflected in a poll conducted by JAM2GO – adding an NPC who would watch the player through the cameras could, in theory, make the experience second-person, if Nick Robinson's widely popular video on the topic is to be believed:
