Starfield Officially Gets NVIDIA DLSS Support

There are also performance optimizations, the ability to eat the food placed in the world, and more.

Some players were surprised when Starfield was released without NVIDIA DLSS support, but they don't have to worry anymore. Bethesda has released the update 1.8.86, officially adding the upscaling technology to the game.

DLSS is a real-time deep-learning performance multiplier designed to boost performance while maintaining image quality. The latest version of the tech, DLSS 3.5, improves ray tracing with Ray Reconstruction.

Now Starfield fans can enjoy NVIDIA's DLSS Super Resolution, Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing (DLAA), Reflex Low Latency, and DLSS Frame Generation, too. However, it doesn't look like they are particularly excited about it as the game's Steam reviews have dropped to Mixed. At the moment of writing, 69% of all ratings are positive, and only 48% of recent reviews are good. Perhaps the change of heart stems from the lack of content on most planets in what was supposed to be a revolutionary space RPG, although the developers say it was designed this way on purpose.

DLSS is not the only feature Starfield added in the update. By popular demand, Bethesda let players eat the food placed in the world. It also introduced GPU performance optimizations, nerfed stealth, and fixed some quests. Here are some of the changes:

  • Addressed a number of memory related issues and leaks.
  • Improved renderer threading model, improving CPU usage most notably on higher end systems.
  • Addressed an issue with how ambient occlusion appeared in ultrawide resolutions.
  • Optimized initial shader compilation that occurs on start-up.
  • Added the ability to adjust Brightness and Contrast in the Display Settings menu.
  • Added the ability to adjust HDR Brightness provided that the system supports it. (Xbox & Windows 11 only).
  • Addressed a number of materials that could sometimes present an unintended pattern under certain conditions.
  • Fixed various visual issues related to the new FOV slider options.
  • Improved the appearance of the eyes on crowd characters.
  • Addressed a number of minor visual issues related to lighting, shadows, terrain, and vegetation.
  • PC: Addressed additional visual issues related to DLSS.
