There are over 250,000 dialogue lines in the game.
Bethesda's director Todd Howard talked about Starfield in a recent interview, discussing its dialogue system, removable traits, and exploration.
He revealed that there are already over 250,000 lines in what he calls a classic Bethesda-style dialogue system (for comparison, Skyrim has about 60,000 lines, and Fallout 4 has 110,000). You will have a series of choices and a speech persuasion system: you'll have to spend points to persuade characters in the dialogue. Howard thinks this integration makes talking feel more natural.
Starfield has a character trait system, and Howard also said that if you don't like your character at some point, you can just remove the traits you dislike by doing an activity or quest instead of just starting over.
As for space exploration, the team has played with fuel and the gravity drive. At first, the ship had fuel that could run out, but they decided to change it:
“You just want to get back to what you were doing, so we’ve recently changed it where the fuel in your ship and the grav drive limits how far you could go at once, but it doesn’t run out of fuel. Maybe there’ll be an update or a mod that allows that, but that’s what we’re doing now.”
Starfield is planned to be released in the first half of 2023.
