Unreal Engine 5's Lumen is Now Available in Twinmotion

Twinmotion 2023.2 has finally been released, bringing Lumen, support for importing animated files, Substance 3D material support, and more.

Following the recent release of Twinmotion 2023.2 Preview 2, Epic Games has finally shipped Twinmotion 2023.2, a new and improved version of its real-time visualization software, usually used in architecture, consumer products, transportation, and fashion industries.

The highlight of the update is, without a doubt, the long-awaited introduction of Lumen, Unreal Engine 5's dynamic global illumination and reflections system. With this update, Twinmotion users can leverage Lumen's capabilities to make indirect lighting adapt to changes to direct lighting or geometry, allowing them to render high-quality stills and videos in a quick and easy way.

"We know you've been waiting for Lumen ever since it was revealed in UE5, and we're very excited to be able to get it into your hands with this release," commented Epic Games.

Another feature added with the release is the ability to import animated FBX, glTF, and GLB files. Twinmotion 2023.2 provides Early Access to this support, enabling you to begin experimenting with workflows, incorporate your custom animations, and make use of animated files from Sketchfab.

You can import both static mesh and skeletal mesh animations, choose between playing them once or in a continuous loop, introduce a delay before playback, and trim the animation's start and end points. If you're working with skeletal objects containing multiple animations, you also have the option to select which specific animation to play.

Moreover, Twinmotion 2023.2 provides a new capability to import Adobe Substance 3D parametric materials in the SBSAR file format and seamlessly save them to your Twinmotion library. As stated by the team, these materials may be ones you've designed in Substance 3D Designer or materials sourced from various libraries available in this format.

"All exposed parameters are available to edit in the Twinmotion Properties panel – for example, you could separately change the stitching color and the main color on a piece of fabric, and adjust the stitch length. Textures are generated on the fly when tweaks are made."

The update also features:

  • Automotive White Studio template: A new template containing a number of predefined shots for setting up automotive renders.
  • Enhanced Scene Authoring: You can now paint and scatter far more asset types, including Sketchfab, Quixel, User Library, and most of the Twinmotion library assets. You also get the ability to preview the media camera view while editing the scene in real-time.
  • Support for Local exposure.
  • Path-traced transparency for water materials.
  • Improved weather particles.
  • WebVR support for Panorama Sets.
  • And much more!
